Human-powered helicopter wins Sikorsky Prize

In 1980, the American Helicopter Society offered the Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Prize for the first helicopter under only human power to:

  • One minute hovering time.
  • Momentary achievement of 3 meters altitude.
  • Controlling the vehicle within a constrained box.
  • All in the same flight.

The AeroVelo team associated with the University of Toronto has won the prize based on their flight on June 13, 2013. The flight of the Atlas helicopter was 64.11 seconds in duration, reached a 3.3m peak altitude, and drifted a maximum of 9.8m. The pilot was Todd Reichert.

In a major milestone for naval aviation, the Northrop Grumman X-47B made the first unmanned carrier arrested landing today on board USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77).
